Visit “Shala” and her mom as the Zoo is transformed for KidsDays June 1 and 2
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo today revealed the new sloth bear cub will be named Shala following a successful donation drive to support wildlife conservation.
The cub was the first sloth bear born at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 30 years and the name Shala pays homage to mom, Shiva, and dad, Balawat. The name is also unique to sloth bears’ native regions in India. The naming opportunity secured more than $2,400 to support work fighting illegal wildlife trafficking.
Shiva and cub, Shala, will be participating in animal enrichment this weekend at the fifth annual KidsDays event presented by Giant Eagle this Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.
Families can enjoy crafts, costumed characters, mini golf, Touch-a-Truck, DJ Dance Party, Professor Wylde’s Animal Show and more all for the price of regular Zoo admission. New this year is the XPOGO Stunt Team with live performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Additional animal enrichment will occur for several different species throughout the two-day event.
