Parent & Child Swim Classes
Saturday, June 1 - August 3 10:15 - 10:45 a.m.
Parent and children learn together through two fun-filled levels to increase children's comfort in the water and build a foundation of basic aquatic and water safety skills.
Tadpole (Infants) - Level I
Designed for ages 6 - 18 months with no previous water experience. Provides experiences and activities for parents and infant.

Guppy (Toddlers) - Level 2
Designed for toddlers age 18 - 36 months with no previous or limited water experience. Builds on skills learned in Level 1 and provides experiences and activities for parent and child.

Preschool Swim Classes
Designed to teach fundamental water safety and aquatic skills to 4 and 5 year olds.
Sunfish - Preschool Level I
Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.
Skills to be learned:
- Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
- Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position
- Back float and recover to a vertical position
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Tread with arm and hand actions
- Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back

Starfish - Preschool Level II
Increase proficiency and build on the basics learned in Sunfish while reinforcing water safety concepts and skills and introducing additional water safety topics.
Skills to be learned:
- Enter water by jumping in
- Fully submerge and hold breath
- Bobbing
- Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
- Recover from front or back float or glide to a vertical position
- Back float and glide
- Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
- Tread water using arm or leg actions
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
- Finning arm action on back

Learn-to-Swim Classes (Levels 1 - 6)
Six progressive levels help swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival and swim skills.
Level I – Introduction to Water Skills
Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills while helping them develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.
Skills to be learned:
- Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
- Bobbing
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front and back glides and floats
- Recover to vertical position
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Tread water using arm and hand actions
- Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
- Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed the Starfish level or have skills equivalent to the to the requirements of the Starfish Level.

Level II – Fundamental Aquatic Skills
It is designed to develop the child’s true locomotion skills while building on the basic aquatic skills and water safety concepts learned in Level I.
Skills to be learned:
- Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side
- Fully submerge and hold breath
- Bobbing
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
- Front and back glides and floats
- Recover from a vertical position
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
- Tread water using arm or leg actions
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
- Finning arm action
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed Level I or have the skills equivalent to the requirements of Level I.

Level III – Stroke Development
For students who are ready to build on the skills achieved in Level II. It is designed to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment.
Skills to be learned:
- Enter water by jumping from the side
- Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
- Bobbing while moving toward safety
- Rotary breathing
- Survival float
- Back float
- Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
- Tread water
- Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front
- Front crawl and elementary backstroke
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed Level II or have the skills equivalent to the requirements of Level II.

Level IV – Stroke Improvement
To improve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level III. It is designed to develop the student’s endurance by swimming familiar strokes and to introduce the breaststroke and sidestroke.
Skills to be learned:
- Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions
- Swim underwater
- Feet-first surface dive
- Survival swimming
- Front crawl and backstroke open turns
- Tread water using 2 different kicks
- Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly
- Flutter and dolphin kicks on back
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed Level III or have the skills equivalent to the requirements of Level III.

Level V – Stroke Refinement
Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (i.e. front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke).
Skills to be learned:
- Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke
- Tuck and pike surface dive, submerge completely
- Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming
- Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly
- Sculling
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed Level IV or have the skills equivalent to the requirements of Level IV.

Level VI – Swimming and Skill Proficiency
For students who have completed Levels I-V. It is designed to refine strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Teaches participants how to prevent aquatic emergencies in various aquatic environments and to introduce and practice self-rescue techniques.
Skills to be learned:
- Butterfly stroke
- Personal water safety
- Fitness swimming
- Lifeguard readiness
Performance Standards:
The child must have completed Level V or have the skills equivalent to the requirements of Level V.
