Ten Trails to Explore Fall Colors
Squire's Castle, North Chagrin Reservation
A landscape photography paradise, this "castle" stands beautifully through every season with a shell of locally quarried Euclid bluestone. The scene is bordered by lawn and forest that seems to stretch far beyond the photographer's lens. With or without a camera, take in the beauty of autumn at Squire's Castle this fall and then peek into the surrounding woods for a wander.
Fort Hill Stairs, Rocky River Reservation
The 155 steps may be challenging but the view is worth it! By reaching the pinnacle of the Fort Hill Stairs, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of fall color from 90 feet above the Rocky River. Reflections of color in the water amidst the shale cliffs provide you with a picture-perfect backdrop.
Sylvan Loop, North Chagrin Reservation
Weave through a labyrinth of giant trees in this rare example of an old growth forest—the A.B. Williams Memorial Woods. Connect with Sylvan Loop and reap your reward upon reaching the Dinger’s Marsh overlook. A reward of an expansive, quiet view from above a thriving marsh. This overlook is best appreciated in the morning hours.
Hinckley Lake, Hinckley Reservation
The 3.1-mile Hinckley Lake Loop trail takes you along the edges of Hinckley Lake, offering you spectacular views of the lake as it is reflecting the many colors of fall. You will also see the handiwork of the beavers that call Hinckley Lake "home."
Berea Falls, Rocky River Reservation
With a fully accessible overlook, Berea Falls is worth a visit during every season. This time of year, the fall color should not be missed! Take in the views of the transforming trees, cascading waterfalls and train trestles, then easily access the All Purpose Trail for a walk.
Henry Church, Jr., Rock Loop, South Chagrin Reservation
Towering hemlocks, oaks, and beech trees line the rugged and scenic trail down to Henry Church, Jr., Rock. Cascading waterfalls and sandstone cliffs provide a spectacular backdrop for fall color changes in this diverse plant community. Listen for the distinctive rattles of belted kingfisher as they hunt for minnows in the shallows along the river's edge.
Sunset Pond, North Chagrin Reservation
The accessible Sunset Pond, just next to North Chagrin Nature Center, is best appreciated while relaxing on a park bench with friends. The autumn sun kisses the water and ever-changing tree canopy—a parade of greens to yellows, oranges, and reds, a lucky beam of fall light will show hues of purple as well. Take note of the beautiful gardens with labeled wildflowers, shrubs, and trees.
Chagrin Overloop Loop, South Chagrin Reservation
Among the quietest trails in Cleveland Metroparks, this one-mile hidden gem will have you feeling one with nature. Small rocks help to keep your feet dry while crossing the shallow stream, followed by an ascent to the ridgeline. The trail winds you through a forest of large white pines before reaching an overlook that offers sweeping views of the Chagrin River Valley below.
Tinker’s Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook, Bedford Reservation
Boasting an impressive collection of tree diversity, the Tinker's Creek Gorge Overlook is in a league of its own when it comes to viewing fall color. Mere steps from the roadside parking lot, this location provides easy access to an unobstructed view of one of Northeast Ohio's greatest natural areas.
Quarry Loop, Bradley Woods Reservation
The only swamp forest in Cleveland Metroparks, Bradley Woods Reservation is full of cultural and natural uniqueness. And when it comes to fall color, the Quarry Loop is stunning. Throughout a deep forest filled with red maples, sour gums, tupelos, and pin oaks, the sheer color on this hike is extraordinary and the various shades of red impressive.
