Ten Hidden Ravines in Cleveland Metroparks

Treadway Creek Trail, Brookside Reservation

This secluded ravine is well hidden in a large residential area of Old Brooklyn in Cleveland. Spring wildflowers abound on the seemingly untouched slopes, and a gentle trickle of water that cuts through the steep ravine brings on the illusion of being far from the city. The Treadway Creek Trail follows this ravine, connecting the neighborhood to the Towpath Trail.

Mountain Bike Trail, Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation

Just footsteps away from the rumble and tumble of nearby industry is a deep and dramatic wooded ravine teeming with birds and wildlife. Mature oaks, hickories, and beeches tower over the ravine, bringing a rural and rustic feel to the Cuyahoga Industrial Valley. Follow the mountain bike trail along steep and narrow switchbacks to enjoy a glimpse of this hidden natural gem.

Red Line Greenway, Lakefront Reservation

Walworth Run was once a gently flowing stream that formed a steep and wide ravine as it made its way down to the Cuyahoga River. In the late 19th Century, the stream became so polluted that it was considered a nuisance. By 1903, the entire watercourse was converted into a large underground storm sewer. Although the stream is gone, remnants of the large ravine that it carved are still noticeable from the Red Line Greenway, where birds and wildlife are returning to its replanted slopes.

Forbes Crossing Trail, Bedford Reservation

Starting from the Forbes Woods Trailhead, take the trail down into the Tinker's Creek Valley as you follow a well-hidden tributary stream. Small fish can sometimes be seen darting through its ripples and runs, and small bridges and boardwalks will take you over the stream as you descend through a deep and maturing woodland area.

Downstream from Cuyahoga County's tallest waterfall, Mill Creek Falls, is a secluded area with a short, paved loop trail where you can carefully look down into a steep gorge. The sights and sounds of the city seem to fade away suddenly as Mill Creek drops down and out of site towards its final destination, the Cuyahoga River.

Quarry Picnic Area, Euclid Creek Reservation

One of the most dramatic sections of Euclid Creek is almost entirely invisible to the vast majority of park visitors, but it can easily be admired from the Quarry Picnic Area. Upstream from the picnic grove, the stream tumbles through huge outcroppings of Berea sandstone, which forms large, towering cliffs along the valley walls. Downstream from the picnic grove is a small cascade that passes over the attractive, light blue Euclid bluestone, which was once highly sought and quarried extensively for use in building materials.
